About the Yamaha IT 200
The Yamaha IT 200 is a light air-cooled 196cc two-stroke enduro from the 1980s. It was built for technical off-road work: compact, tall and straightforward. The engine delivers its power eagerly and low mass makes it manageable in woods and sand, but suspension, brakes and lighting are clearly of their era. In the Netherlands it is mainly of interest as a hobby or competition classic.
Look beyond fresh motocross plastics when buying. Check frame, subframe and footrests for hard use, and measure compression before riding. A working oil pump or proof of correctly mixed premix is essential. Fork seals, wheel bearings, chain guide and airbox deserve extra attention because these bikes are often used in mud and sand. A complete, carefully maintained IT 200 is far more appealing than a polished project with unknown engine history.

What to check before buying
- Measure compression and listen for crank and piston noise; an off-road two-stroke can have many engine hours.
- Check oil pump or premix ratio and inspect intake rubber, carburettor and air filter for sand ingestion.
- Inspect fork seals, shock, linkage bearings and wheel bearings for play or leaks.
- Inspect frame, subframe, footrests and skid area for cracks or poorly repaired off-road damage.
