GenerationThe DT 400 is the large air-cooled 397cc two-stroke in Yamaha's straightforward dual-purpose chassis. Check that the Autolube and airbox parts are complete, as both matter for reliability and originality.
About the Yamaha DT 400
The Yamaha DT 400 is a large air-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke enduro from the mid-1970s. It combines a 397cc engine with long suspension travel, a high exhaust and simple construction that works on both unpaved roads and secondary tarmac. It is not a modern trail bike: power arrives abruptly, brakes and suspension are period equipment and the seat is tall.
For a buyer, a complete and as-original-as-possible DT 400 is usually the sensible choice. Check the frame and underside for old off-road damage and inspect the crankshaft, piston and gearbox critically. Not every part is easy to source, so the correct exhaust, airbox and oil pump have real value. A well-maintained example is a characterful classic for relaxed lanes and trails, not daily motorway use.

What to check before buying
- Measure compression and listen for crankshaft or big-end noise; rebuilding a large two-stroke can be expensive.
- Inspect the Autolube oil tank, pump and lines for leaks or incorrect adjustment before sustained riding.
- Inspect frame, swingarm, rims and fork legs for cracks, misalignment and signs of hard off-road use.
- Check tank and carburettor for corrosion after storage, then test charging coil, lights and ignition.
