The DS 6 uses an improved 246cc two-stroke twin with five-port cylinders. Original inlet, exhaust and oil-system parts make a major difference to reliability.
The Yamaha DS 6 is the 246cc two-stroke twin through which Yamaha further developed its lightweight sport motorcycles in the late 1960s. Its air-cooled engine with improved porting is livelier than older YDS models, but it remains a classic construction with drum brakes and limited weather protection. It mainly suits enthusiasts of original Japanese two-stroke classics.
At viewing, a complete and honest base matters more than a freshly painted restoration. Check engine and frame numbers, exhausts, carburettors and airbox; incorrect parts make tuning and valuation difficult. Ask about crankshaft and oil-pump rebuilding, inspect the tank for corrosion and test brakes and electrics carefully. A good DS 6 feels light and lively, but needs regular maintenance and respect for its age.
