GenerationThe AS-3 is the lightweight 124cc two-stroke twin with six gears. Identify an original bike by its compact air-cooled cylinders and sporting slim-tank profile; condition and completeness matter more than minor cosmetic deviations.
About the Yamaha AS 3
The Yamaha AS-3 is a compact two-stroke twin from the early 1970s. Its air-cooled 124cc rotary-valve engine was lively for its size and drove through a six-speed gearbox. That made the AS-3 Yamaha's sporting small-capacity road model: light, narrow and built to be revved rather than to waft along. In the Netherlands it is now mainly encountered as a classic or restoration project.
For a buyer, originality and the quality of previous rebuild work matter more than a low asking price. A complete machine with the correct exhausts, carburettors and side panels is usually a better starting point than a cheap bike missing model-specific parts. Its brakes, tyres and lighting are period equipment, so do not expect modern safety margins. A well-set-up AS-3 is a charming lightweight classic for relaxed rides and events, not a daily motorway motorcycle.

What to check before buying
- Check that both cylinders build compression evenly and that the engine revs without rattling or detonation.
- Inspect crank seals and the oil pump for leaks; an air leak or incorrect two-stroke oil setting can damage a piston.
- Inspect tank, frame and exhaust headers for internal corrosion and poorly repaired weld or chrome damage.
- Test the six-speed gearbox, clutch and every electrical function; selector and wiring faults are common on long-stored classics.
