GS 160
GenerationThe final Gran Sport combines 10-inch wheels with the 146 cc two-stroke and four-speed transmission. Its trapezoidal lamp and long seat are key identifiers; correct original trim and engine components are especially valuable.
About the Vespa 160 GS
The Vespa GS 160 is the final and most developed Gran Sport from Vespa's classic era. Built from 1962 to 1964, it uses a 145.5 cc air-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke, a four-speed gearbox and the characteristic spare-wheel position behind the leg shield. Its larger 10-inch wheels, trapezoidal headlamp and long flat seat clearly distinguish it from the earlier GS 150.
This is a collectible touring scooter rather than a modern city commuter. At relaxed road speeds the GS 160 is remarkably composed, but its drum brakes, manual shifting and vintage two-stroke engine reward an experienced owner. Check completeness and restoration quality closely: original trim and correct mechanical parts matter more to both value and usability than fresh paint.

What to check before buying
- Verify frame and engine numbers match the correct GS 160 type; composite restorations do exist.
- Inspect the floor, running boards and leg-shield joints for corrosion or filler hidden beneath fresh paint.
- Test all four gears and the clutch cold and hot; poor shift adjustment or a worn cruciform causes gears to jump out.
- Check spark, generator wiring and drum-brake operation; correct original electrical and braking parts are costly.
