Years
2020 - present
The Thruxton RS develops the 1200 R with a higher-output 1200cc twin, Showa/Öhlins hardware and a more sporting finish. Look for an explicit RS designation: a regular 1200 from the same period is not an RS.
Years
2016 - 2019
The 2016 generation is not a bored-out 865 but a new liquid-cooled 1200cc twin with much more torque and modern electronics. The R is chiefly distinguished by Öhlins suspension and Brembo brakes; engine and base output are shared with the standard 1200.
Years
2008 - 2015
The injected 865cc Thruxton retains the air-cooled classic platform but starts and fuels more consistently than the carburetted version. Its injection is deliberately disguised, so establish year and VIN rather than relying on appearance alone.
Years
2004 - 2007
The first modern Thruxton combines the air-cooled 865cc twin with carburettors and a deliberately simple café-racer specification. Its early engine and fuel system make cold running and maintenance more important than on the later injected bike.
The Triumph Thruxton is the café racer in the modern Bonneville family. The first Hinckley generation arrived in 2004 with an air-cooled 865cc parallel twin, low clip-ons and an unmistakably classic stance. Carburettors later gave way to fuel injection without changing its straightforward character. From 2016 the name moved to an all-new liquid-cooled 1200cc twin; the Thruxton R added premium suspension and brakes. The 2020-on Thruxton RS is the sharpest version, with more power and a lighter-focused sporting specification.
A Thruxton is bought as much for its riding position and look as for its engine. Its wrists carry more weight and its pegs sit higher than on a Bonneville, making it rewarding on flowing roads but less relaxed for two-up touring. When viewing a used example, establish whether it is an 865, a 1200/R or an RS rather than relying on the name alone: the engines, electronics and parts situation differ materially.
A used Triumph Thruxton costs €6,720 on average. Most cost €4,750 to €17,510. This is based on 13 motorcycles for sale now.
