About the Triumph 3 T
The Triumph 3T is a British pre-unit parallel twin with a 349 cc OHV engine, produced by the Triumph Engineering Company in Meriden from 1945 to 1951. The 3T was the civilian derivative of the 3TW military motorcycle, released immediately after the Second World War as a road-going model. With around 19 hp it was a modest but reliable touring machine, typical of the post-war British motorcycle industry.
The 3T appeals exclusively to enthusiasts of British pre-war and early post-war classics. It demands deep knowledge of pre-unit Triumph technology and access to specialist parts, now available almost exclusively through restoration specialists. For riders seeking a museum piece or a piece of living heritage, the 3T represents authentic British motorcycling history.

What to check before buying
- Check the magneto ignition system for point wear and correct timing; original magnetos over 75 years old are unreliable without recent overhaul.
- Inspect the pre-unit gearbox for oil leaks and smooth shifting; the separate gearbox design is susceptible to indexing wear.
- Verify the completeness and authenticity of the machine; many 3T examples have been mixed with parts from other Triumph models over the decades.
- Check drum brakes for lining condition and potential oval wear on the drums.
