About the Piaggio Zip SP
The Piaggio Zip SP is the sport-trim version of the Zip scooter range, sold under Piaggio since 1996 (initially branded as Puch on the Dutch market). It differs from the standard Zip with a liquid-cooled two-stroke engine, a mono-telescopic front fork, a larger front disc brake and a sportier bodywork. The Dutch fleet also includes 125 cc registrations with a four-stroke engine for the higher licence class.
The Zip SP is valued for its low weight, narrow agile frame and uncomplicated mechanics that keep maintenance and tuning within reach of home mechanics. The two-stroke versions enjoy a vast aftermarket: Malossi, Polini and PM Tuning supply cylinders, variators and exhausts that significantly raise output. That makes the scooter popular with hobbyists but also means many surviving examples have a tuning history. An original, untuned Zip SP is becoming increasingly rare.

What to check before buying
- Ask explicitly about tuning history; uprated two-stroke engines wear pistons and cylinders much faster.
- Check the cooling system for leaks and the water pump for proper operation; overheating quickly seizes the engine.
- Inspect the kickstart cover and gear teeth for wear; older types without a bearing here are especially prone to issues.
- Look for rust in the frame under the floor panel and around the steering column; steel parts suffer from road salt.
- Inspect the variator and CVT belt; heavy urban use causes early wear.
