About the Piaggio GT 200
The Piaggio GT 200, also known as the X9 200 Granturismo or Vespa Granturismo 200, is a mid-sized touring scooter introduced around 2003 as part of the Granturismo line-up. It is powered by a liquid-cooled 198 cc four-stroke single with automatic CVT, producing roughly 20 hp. Larger wheels (12-inch front, 11-inch rear) and a generous windshield make it suitable for daily commutes across ring roads and provincial routes alike.
The GT 200 is aimed at riders who want more comfort and storage than a 125 cc scooter offers but do not need the weight or power of a 250/300. A full-face helmet fits under the seat and the low step-through makes it pillion-friendly. The steel monocoque frame is robust but prone to rust, especially along the seam welds under the floor panel. The model is out of production and has been replaced by the GTS 300 family, which leaves the GT 200 mainly attractive as a budget touring scooter on the second-hand market.

What to check before buying
- Check the steel frame under the floor panel and along the seam welds for rust; a recurring issue on this generation.
- Inspect the variator rollers, clutch shoes and CVT belt; replacement is almost unavoidable at higher mileage.
- Ask whether the water pump and coolant have been replaced recently; overheating quickly damages the cylinder head.
- Look for play in the steering head and rear swingarm bearings; at this weight they loosen with age.
- Check the electrics around the steering head and seat lock; moisture ingress causes corrosion and intermittent contacts.
