About the Moto Guzzi 1000 S
The Moto Guzzi 1000 S is a small-series sporting Guzzi from the late 1980s and early 1990s. It combines the 948cc air-cooled big-block V-twin and shaft drive with low bars, classic Le Mans proportions and a distinctive, collectable finish. The 1000 S is neither an ordinary SP tourer nor a modern V7: original bodywork, wheels, exhaust and colour scheme matter greatly to authenticity and value.
This is a motorcycle for a rider who values analogue riding feel and mechanical character over modern ergonomics or electronics. The clip-ons and sporting position make it less relaxed than a California, while maintenance of the shaft drive, gearbox and electrics remains just as important as on other big Guzzis. Buy on provenance and invoices: a beautiful presentation can conceal a built-up machine. A cold test ride, correct shifting and brakes that do not bind are essentials before originality can justify a price premium.

What to check before buying
- Check frame number, engine code, paint, fairing, wheels and exhaust against original 1000 S specification; assembled Le Mans-style bikes exist.
- Check final-drive oil, universal joint and splines for leaks, play and knocks under load changes.
- Test clutch and gearbox fully warm; heavy shifting, jumping out of gear or slip under load needs investigation.
- Check charging voltage, starter, wiring and switches; age and past modifications regularly create electrical faults.
- Inspect brakes, brake hoses, fork and suspension for corrosion, leaks and safe operation before assigning value to originality.
