About the Ktm 125 SMC-R
The KTM 125 SMC R is a 125 cc supermoto built around a water-cooled two-stroke single producing around 15 hp. KTM offers the SMC R as the road-legal version of the 125 EXC enduro bike, fitted with 17-inch supermoto wheels and road-spec suspension. Weight is around 84 kg and the high-revving two-stroke gives it an extremely sporty character.
The 125 SMC R targets A1-licence holders (16 and over) who want more sporting character than a standard 125. Its agile handling and light weight make it ideal for city riding and twisty roads. Motorway capability is limited; it is at its best on smaller roads. Rivals include the Husqvarna 125 Vitpilen and Beta 125 RR. The two-stroke engine demands more frequent maintenance than a four-stroke equivalent.

What to check before buying
- Check piston and cylinder bore condition; a two-stroke 125 requires more frequent top-end inspection than a four-stroke; worn pistons cause power loss.
- Inspect the expansion chamber exhaust for rust and cracks; two-stroke exhausts are expensive to replace.
- Check for signs of riding below the power band; a two-stroke runs poorly at low revs and lugging accelerates wear.
- Check clutch and clutch springs condition; heavy city use with a two-stroke increases clutch wear.
