The original EN500 places the GPZ500S-derived 498 cc parallel twin in a light cruiser, using belt drive and a relatively rev-happy engine character.
The Kawasaki EN 500 is a lightweight cruiser powered by an air-cooled 498 cc parallel-twin, produced between 1990 and 2003. It shares its engine architecture with the EX 500 (GPZ 500S) but retuned for low- and mid-range torque through milder cam timing, heavier flywheel mass and a six-speed gearbox. Visually it is defined by long pull-back handlebars, forward-set foot pegs, a teardrop tank and a stepped saddle. The double-cradle steel frame uses a conventional telescopic fork up front and twin preload-adjustable shocks at the rear. Peak output sits around 50 hp, but the twin pulls cleanly from 2,000 to 6,000 rpm, exactly where cruiser riders live.
The EN 500 is aimed at beginners and short urban rides: low seat height, cheap to maintain and mechanically simple. A2 licence holders manage it well, and the narrow front wheel keeps it light at walking pace. It is less suited to long motorway runs, there is no wind protection and the twin vibrates noticeably above 130 km/h. Period rivals were the Suzuki LS 650 Savage, Yamaha XV 535 Virago and Honda VT 500 Shadow. Well-kept examples with documented chain drive service and valve-clearance history remain easy to find.
