1974–1975 S3 400 / Mach II
GenerationThe S3 is the 399cc air-cooled triple with oil injection and three exhausts. It replaced the S2 350; the later KH400 successor does not belong to this technical row.
About the Kawasaki 400 S3
The Kawasaki 400 S3, called Mach II in some markets, is the middleweight two-stroke triple from Kawasaki’s triple family. It arrived for 1974 as the successor to the S2 350 and is identified by its air-cooled 399cc inline triple, three exhausts and oil injection. It is not a KH400: the later successor received, among other changes, different ignition and emissions equipment. On an S3, matching frame, engine and model codes therefore matter more than displacement alone.
A well-set-up S3 feels light and lively, but remains a 1970s classic with a rear drum brake, simple suspension and typical two-stroke fuel use. It suits a rider who values mechanical involvement, routine maintenance and original details, rather than someone seeking modern brakes, range or effortless daily transport. When buying, verify that the oil injection, carburation, ignition and exhaust parts are complete and correct.

What to check before buying
- Inspect the oil-injection pump, lines and bleeding for leaks or hardened hoses; a missing or incorrectly adjusted pump can cause severe engine damage.
- Check compression and cold-idle stability; air leaks from crank seals or inlet rubbers are a key risk on an old two-stroke.
- Confirm that all three carburettors, the airbox and all three exhausts are present and that fuelling is even; pod filters or expansion chambers often require different jetting.
- Inspect points, coils, charging voltage and wiring for corrosion or improvised work, and check the tank, fuel tap and brake lines.
