About the Indian Four
The Indian Four is the American air-cooled inline-four that Indian built from 1928 to 1942, initially as the successor to the Ace Four, from 1932 redeveloped on an Indian frame with blade-style front suspension and a sprung saddle. Displacement sat near 1265cc and the engine drove through a three-speed gearbox with tank-mounted hand shift. Before the war the Four was viewed as America's most refined motorcycle, with a smoother feel than contemporary V-twins and a top speed around 130 km/h.
Today this is a top-tier collector machine. Restored examples are expensive and originality, matching numbers, correct tank panels, the right saddle, drives value heavily. Ergonomics are low, long and relaxed, with foot clutch, hand shift and a riding style that takes practice. Parts for the four-cylinder overhead-valve gear and the original Linkert carburettor are scarce and specialised. Best suited to collectors and pre-war touring events at summer pace, not daily use.

What to check before buying
- Check matching numbers on engine and frame; the Four was often re-tagged with parts from other years.
- Inspect the overhead-valve gear and rocker boxes for oil leaks and correct assembly; early F-types differ from late E-types.
- Look at the cradle frame and blade front fork for stress cracks around the mounts; this is an inspection point.
- Original Linkert carburettors and magneto ignition parts are scarce; reproduction items lower value sharply.
- Ask for full restoration documentation; a Four without provenance is hard to insure and resell.
