Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Test the throttle cable and manual spark advance for free, non-sticking movement. The 741-B factory manual calls for periodic lubrication of these control cables.
  • Check front and rear brake free play and ensure that neither lever nor pedal reaches its stop. Test brake balance only at low speed in a safe area.
  • Ask for evidence of maintenance to engine oil, transmission oil, primary drive and chains. The factory book treats these as separate lubrication and inspection items; old or mixed oil is not evidence of maintenance.
  • Test ignition, generator and lighting, and inspect the wiring for safe, documented repairs. These systems have dedicated diagnosis and maintenance sections in the factory book.
  • Check the carburettor and oil-bath air cleaner for correct specification, leaks and clean operation. If in doubt, have the set-up assessed by a pre-war Indian Scout specialist.
