The NC30 is the best-known generation with RC30-style bodywork, Pro-Arm and refined 360-degree V4. Originality and accurate carburettor setup define the riding experience.
Years
1987 - 1989
The NC24 introduced the single-sided Pro-Arm and a more compact chassis. Exhaust and bodywork details distinguish it from the later NC30.
Years
1986 - 1987
The NC21 is the first VFR400R, using a conventional swingarm and early V4 layout. It is rarer and less refined than its successors.
The Honda VFR400R is a Japanese sportbike produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s, built around a compact 399 cc V4 engine with a distinctive mechanical soundtrack and linear power delivery. It went through several generations, the NC21 (1986), NC24 (1987) and NC30 (1989–1992), and was considered the definitive 400 cc sportbike on the Japanese domestic market. The NC30 in particular offered genuine sports credentials: a rigid aluminium frame, telescopic forks with anti-dive, and twin front disc brakes that put it in a class above most contemporary middleweights.
This is not a learner bike, the V4's narrow powerband demands commitment and the riding position is low and aggressive. It suits an experienced rider who wants a capable canyon carver with real heritage appeal. Rivals included the Kawasaki ZXR400 and Yamaha FZR400, but the Honda distinguishes itself with class-leading reliability and that unmistakable V4 note.
