About the Honda CBX 550
The Honda CBX 550 is a sporty early-1980s middleweight with a 572cc liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine. It combines the compact proportions of a 550 with advanced period engineering: four valves per cylinder, a stiff chassis and Pro-Link rear suspension on many versions. That makes it feel more modern than many air-cooled contemporaries, but also more complex to restore correctly.
The CBX 550 appeals to riders wanting a characterful Japanese four without the size of a CBX 1000. A good example revs freely and steers lightly, but depends on sound cooling, carburation and charging systems. Also inspect the original exhaust, any fairing or tail parts, and the rear suspension. A complete motorcycle with documented overhaul work is normally a wiser choice than a cheap project missing model-specific components.

What to check before buying
- Inspect radiator, water pump, hoses and thermostat; cooling faults can quickly become expensive.
- Measure charging voltage and inspect regulator/rectifier and connectors for discolouration or melted plastic.
- Check carburettors and inlet rubbers for an even cold start and clean response through the mid-range.
- Inspect Pro-Link linkage and rear shock for play, seizure and leaks.
