About this model

About the Honda CBR 250

The Honda CBR 250 is a 250 cc sportbike series produced by Honda across several generations from 1986 to the present. The best-known versions are the CBR250R (MC17, 1986-1988) with a four-cylinder engine, the CBR250RR (MC22, 1990-1999) with a high-revving 45 hp four-cylinder, and the modern CBR250R (2011-2015) with a 26 hp liquid-cooled single. The CBR250RR MC22 is legendary as a Japanese domestic market sportbike; modern versions target Asian and European A2 markets.

The CBR 250 suits sport-oriented riders who want to compete in the 250 cc class, A2-licence riders (27 hp variant) or enthusiasts of classic Japanese sportbikes (MC22). The four-cylinder MC22 models are now collector items. The modern single-cylinder version is more reliable and cheaper to maintain. Rivals include the Kawasaki Ninja 250R and Yamaha YZF-R25. The CBR 250 has not been sold as a standalone model in Europe since 2015.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • On the four-cylinder MC22, check valve clearances and carburettor condition (four carburettors); service is time-consuming.
  • Check the coolant temperature gauge for normal operation: overheating occurs in city traffic if the cooling system is neglected (modern versions).
  • Check chain and sprockets for wear; spirited riding on a 250 cc rapidly wears the drivetrain.
  • Inspect the frame and fairing for crash damage: sporty riders sometimes use these bikes on track days.
  • On older MC17/MC22 models, check the wiring harness for age-related degradation and battery condition.
