The CB-1 is the compact 399cc inline-four built for Japan. It shares a high-revving VFR400-era engine character but uses naked street styling.
The Honda CB-1 (model code NC27) is a 1989-1990 naked sportbike powered by a 399 cc inline-four with four valves per cylinder, derived from the CBR400RR engine. It combines a light steel frame, monoshock rear suspension and cast-iron callipers into a nimble, lively city-and-back-roads package. The CB-1 stood in the shadow of the naked CB400 Super Four (its eventual successor), giving it cult status among Honda enthusiasts, especially in the grey-import market.
The CB-1 is an interesting choice for early-1990s Japanese naked four-cylinder fans and as an A2-friendly (factory-restrictable to 35 kW) classic. It is light (168 kg), revs eagerly past 12,000 rpm and delivers the screaming-four soundtrack of its era. Seat height is 770 mm. Period rivals were the Yamaha FZR400, Kawasaki ZXR400 and Suzuki Bandit 400, though the CB-1 was tuned less aggressively than the fully-faired racers.
