Years
1984 - 1990
The Evolution generation uses the more reliable aluminium 1,337cc engine and is the final classic FX Super Glide before the Dyna line. Adverts for a 1990s-on Dyna Super Glide do not belong to this family.
Years
1979 - 1983
The later Shovelhead Super Glide grew to 1,338cc and appeared as FXE and sportier FXEF versions. Electrical system, brakes and original exhaust deserve particular attention on these transition models.
Years
1971 - 1978
The original FX Super Glide combines an FL chassis and 1,207cc Shovelhead with a lighter Sportster front end. Early boattail bikes are rare; originality plus frame and engine codes matter more than accessories.
The Harley-Davidson Super Glide (FX) was a groundbreaking model introduced in 1971 as the world's first factory-custom motorcycle. Designed by Willie G. Davidson, it combined the FL touring chassis with the lighter Sportster front end, a concept that blurred the line between cruiser and chopper. Initially fitted with the Shovelhead 1200cc, later the Shovelhead 1340cc, and after the Evolution introduction in 1984 with the Evo engine. The FX line was discontinued in 1990 when the new Dyna platform replaced all FX variants.
The original Super Glide appeals to collectors and riders who want to own a historically significant piece of motorcycle history. The dynamics are deliberately spartan: no windscreen, no saddlebags, raw power. Through its role as the originator of the factory-custom concept, the Super Glide is highly regarded in the classic Harley scene. Not to be confused with the Dyna Super Glide (post-1991), which is a different model on a new chassis.
