About the Harley Davidson Night Train
The Harley-Davidson Night Train (FXSTB) is a Softail chopper produced from 1998 to 2009, instantly recognisable by its all-black finish: engine, exhausts, and virtually all metalwork are black-anodised or powder-coated. The 88B Twin Cam (1,450 cc) or the 96 Twin Cam (1,584 cc, from 2007) produce 63 and 67 hp respectively, with the signature Harley-Davidson V-twin character.
The Night Train targets riders who want a dark, minimalist bobber style with mainstream reliability. The low seat and relaxed steering geometry provide a comfortable cruiser experience, but it is less suited to quick cornering. It competes with the Yamaha V-Star 1100 and Honda Shadow. It is a popular custom chopper base thanks to its understated appearance.

What to check before buying
- Check primary chain tension and the primary cover for oil leaks; a well-known maintenance point on Twin Cam engines.
- Inspect the compensating sprocket for rattling on cold start; this is a frequently reported issue on 96 cubic inch engines.
- Check the engine casting seams for cracks on high-mileage examples that have been ridden hard.
- Check the rear Softail spring units for fluid leakage from the hidden shock units beneath the frame.
- Inspect the wiring and battery connections; the all-black metalwork makes corrosion at contact points difficult to spot.
