The Harley-Davidson XLCR Café Racer is an iconic departure from Harley's cruiser tradition, produced from 1977 to 1978. Designed by Willie G. Davidson, it grafts café racer bodywork onto the Sportster XL platform: a black bikini fairing, siamese exhaust, low bars, and a solo seat with rear cowl. The 1000 cc OHV Ironhead V-twin produces modest power, but the riding experience and silhouette are unlike anything else in the Harley lineup.
A commercial disappointment at launch, the XLCR has since become a highly coveted collector's piece. It targets riders seeking a historically significant and visually distinct Harley. The low clip-ons and compact seating position demand a more sport-oriented rider compared to conventional Harley ergonomics. A natural comparison point is the early Ducati café racers of the same era.
