Generations and editions
Features and handling differ by generation. Use this overview to find the right version.
Years
2025 - present
2025-current new generation
GenerationThe revised MC 85 from 2025 has an updated chassis and ergonomic base but remains a maintenance-intensive 85cc race two-stroke. On a recent example, check whether it was supplied with the small or big wheelset and whether hours have been recorded from new.
Years
2021 - 2024
2021-2024 small wheel 17/14
EditionThe 17/14 version is the small-wheel MC 85 for shorter riders stepping up from a 65cc. It uses the same 85cc two-stroke as the big-wheel version, but seat height and wheel sizes need to suit the rider.
Years
2021 - 2024
2021-2024 big wheel 19/16
EditionThe 19/16 version is the big-wheel MC 85 for taller junior riders. A separate wheelset or aftermarket rims can change the setup, so use both wheel markings and frame number when identifying one.
About the Gasgas MC 85
The GasGas MC 85 is an 85cc two-stroke for young motocross riders between the 65cc and 125cc classes. It uses a chromoly-steel frame, hydraulic clutch, six-speed gearbox and WP suspension. The MC 85 was supplied with small 17/14 or big 19/16 wheels; that difference matters more for fit and resale than stickers or accessories. It is a track machine without road registration.
On a used MC 85, engine hours, piston history, filter care and the condition of wheels and suspension are the key checks. An advert containing only generic keywords or stating 65cc does not prove that it is an MC 85. Verify frame number, engine code and wheel size yourself. The 2025+ generation received a newer base and ergonomics, so compare parts by model year rather than model name alone.

What to check before buying
- Check engine hours; 85cc two-strokes have short piston/ring service intervals; this is sometimes tracked in competition use, sometimes not.
- Inspect frame and subframe for cracks; young riders frequently cause falls and impact damage.
- Check suspension for functional wear; fork and shock ends are vulnerable under repeated heavy use.
- Verify original wheel size and whether a wheel size conversion has been made.
