About the Fantic XEF 250
The Fantic XEF 250 is a four-stroke enduro from Italian brand Fantic, which returned to the off-road segment in 2020. The engine is a 249 cc water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke sourced from Yamaha (identical to the YZ250F unit), installed in Fantic's own chassis with upside-down forks and a monoshock rear. The result is similar handling to the Yamaha but with Italian flair in finish and livery. The XEF 250 is available in both a cross and a racing specification.
The XEF 250 targets enduro and motocross riders at competition or advanced recreational level. The approximately 103 kg dry weight and high power output make it demanding but rewarding. It is not a first bike, but popular for riders stepping up from 125 cc machines. Rivals include the KTM 250 EXC-F and Husqvarna FC 250. Always scrutinise the service history carefully when buying used.

What to check before buying
- Check the piston rings and cylinder bore for wear; high-revving single-cylinders require regular engine rebuilds.
- Inspect the clutch plates for wear, especially on bikes used in competition.
- Check crash guards and the frame for impact damage; enduro bikes fall regularly and damage can be deeper than visible.
- Inspect the upside-down fork seals for oil weeping: USD forks are more expensive to rebuild than conventional ones.
- Verify whether the bike has a power-restricted (35 kW) setup and whether it has been correctly installed.
