1975–1976 860 GTS
GenerationThe 860 GTS is the touring-oriented mid-1970s bevel twin, with an 864cc air-cooled desmodromic L-twin, five-speed gearbox and more conventional GTS bodywork. It is a distinct GTS model: do not confuse it with an 860 GT, 860 SD or Darmah based on displacement or colour alone.
About the Ducati 860 GTS
The Ducati 860 GTS is the more practical touring interpretation of Taglioni's air-cooled bevel twin from the mid-1970s. Its 864 cc L-twin combines desmodromic valve gear with a five-speed transmission and relaxed, torque-rich delivery. Compared with the original 860 GT, the GTS gained a more conventional tank, seat and side panels. A long wheelbase, stable geometry and comfortable riding position suit flowing country roads rather than hurried urban work.
When buying, originality and maintenance matter more than shine. Check crankcase, frame and engine numbers, Dell'Orto carburettors, exhausts and the electrical system because many examples have been altered. Ask about valve clearances, ignition, bevel-drive work and recent engine servicing by a specialist. Start it cold and listen for bearing or gear noise. Inspect tank and frame corrosion, steering-head and swingarm play, plus leaks around forks, crankcases and cylinder bases. Model-specific bodywork and original instruments are expensive.
