About the Ducati 125 Desmo
The Ducati 125 Desmo is an iconic single-cylinder racing motorcycle from Bologna, produced in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The 'Desmo' name refers to the desmodromic valve system: valves are mechanically opened and closed without return springs. This system, developed by engineer Fabio Taglioni, allowed higher engine speeds and became Ducati's defining trademark.
The 125 Desmo is today a collector's piece in the classic and vintage racing world. It was originally raced in the 125cc GP class and club events. You buy one for historical value and period riding dynamics, not daily use. Comparable collector items include the MV Agusta 125 Bialbero and Mondial 125.

What to check before buying
- Check the desmodromic valve actuation for original components; replica and counterfeit parts circulate in the market and reduce value significantly.
- Inspect the frame for previous welding repairs; race bikes were used hard and sometimes crudely repaired.
- Verify that the engine block and number match the documentation; numbers matching is critical to value.
- Have the electrics and magneto assessed by a specialist before attempting to start after prolonged storage.
