D7–B175 (1958–1971)

GenerationEarly rigid and plunger-frame Bantams are simple two-strokes, with hand shifting on the oldest D1 and modest performance. Originality matters more than speed.
About the Bsa Bantam
The BSA Bantam name links two very different eras. The classic British Bantam was built from 1948 to 1971 as a simple two-stroke commuter and utility motorcycle, initially at 123 cc and later at 148 and 175 cc. From 2026 the revived BSA reuses the name for a modern 334 cc single-cylinder roadster with fuel injection, ABS and disc brakes.
On a classic Bantam, type code, originality and restoration quality determine value. The D1 is basic and slow; D7, D10, D14 and B175 versions progressively add performance and usability. The new Bantam 350 is instead an approachable A2 roadster for town and back roads. Always establish which generation is offered because engineering, parts supply and intended use are completely different despite the shared name.

What to check before buying
- Inspect classic tanks, mudguards and frames for rust, filler and non-original welding.
- Test two-strokes from cold for crank seals, excess smoke, air leaks and jumping gears.
- Check frame and type numbers against documents; many Bantams have been assembled from parts.
- On the new 350, inspect brakes, ABS, wiring and evidence of the first scheduled service.
