What to check before buying
- First verify that it is truly a B20 Tourer: this is the 249cc side-valve model from 1937–1938, not the OHV B21/B22 or a later BSA single. Check frame and engine numbers with a BSA dating source.
- Check compression, valve clearance, carburettor and ignition when cold starting and once warm. On a pre-war side-valve single, calm and even running matters more than a quoted top speed.
- Inspect oil supply, leaks, return and change history. A machine that has stood needs fresh fuel and a controlled first start, but standing still does not automatically make it defective.
- Check chain drive, clutch, gearbox, brakes and wheels for safe operation; replace worn cables, tyres and brake linings according to condition rather than year alone.
- Inspect frame, forks, mudguards and fixings for corrosion, cracks and non-original alterations. Compare parts with the illustrated BSA instruction book for the 1937 250cc range.
