Generation

The 1954 RS 54 customer machine is the 492 cc long-stroke DOHC boxer with 45 hp, around 130 kg and close to 200 km/h. This row belongs only to an explicit BMW RS 54/Rennsport reference, not modern RS models or later sidecar and works variants.

About this model

About the Bmw RS 54

The BMW RS 54 is the rare Rennsport customer racing boxer introduced by BMW in 1954. The production version has a 492 cc flat twin with bevel-shaft driven double overhead camshafts, 45 hp (33 kW), a weight of about 130 kg and a top speed close to 200 km/h. It is not a road or touring classic, but a historic circuit machine requiring highly specialised knowledge, use and maintenance.

An RS 54 must be identified from frame, engine and factory documentation. Check the correct long-stroke engine, carburettors, ignition, bevel-shaft drive, Earles fork, brakes and race-specific parts. BMW works machines, later sidecar configurations and replicas can differ materially; never automatically apply the 1954 customer-machine specification to them.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Confirm an original RS 54 with frame, engine and provenance documentation; do not confuse it with a replica, works machine or later sidecar RS 54.
  • Have the 492 cc DOHC boxer, bevel shafts and valve train inspected by a specialist for wear, lubrication, timing and non-original modifications.
  • Check the period carburettors, magneto/ignition, fuel supply and cooling for safe, stable operation under load.
  • Inspect frame, Earles fork, steering, drum brakes, wheels and tyres for race use, cracks, alignment and period-correct parts.
  • Verify that every specification belongs to the 1954 customer solo version; later works and sidecar engines have different outputs, displacements and top speeds.
