R 90 family reference (1973-1976)
GenerationThis generic row is only a family reference for 898 cc R 90 adverts without a suffix. Use the separate R 90/6 or R 90 S page for exact output, equipment and valuation; this row does not impose /6 or S specifications.
About the Bmw R 90
The canonical BMW R 90 row is a family reference for adverts that state only “R 90”. In the 1973-1976 /6 series, BMW used two distinct 898 cc boxer models: the comfortable R 90/6 and the clearly sportier R 90 S. The name without a suffix is therefore insufficient to reliably establish output, fairing, carburettors, brake equipment or market value.
Use this page to recognise an incomplete advert, but always confirm the exact type from frame number, type plate and original specification before buying. The R 90/6 has its own profile; the R 90 S is also a separate canonical model. This generic row does not add S specifications to a /6, or vice versa. On either classic airhead, inspect servicing, engine, clutch, five-speed gearbox, shaft, brakes, chassis and 12V electrics.

What to check before buying
- First confirm whether a no-suffix advert is an R 90/6 or R 90 S from frame number, type plate and original engine/fairing specification; “R 90” alone is insufficient.
- From cold, check the air-cooled boxer for oil leaks at pushrod seals, heads and crankcase, and for unwanted valve-train or timing noise.
- Test clutch, five-speed gearbox, shaft and final drive for slip, difficult shifts, play or oil loss.
- Check brakes, forks, swingarm and wheel bearings for wear, and confirm fitted parts belong to the correct version.
- Measure charging voltage and inspect 12V wiring, battery, switches and lighting for age-related problems or non-original modifications.
