R 71 (1938-1941)

Generation

The 1938-1941 R 71 is the 746 cc side-valve touring boxer with 22 hp, a four-speed gearbox, shaft drive and plunger rear suspension. It was BMW's last side-valve and could be supplied with optional hand shift; the OHV R 66 is a separate sports model.

About this model

About the Bmw R 71

The 1938-1941 BMW R 71 is the 746 cc long-distance tourer from BMW's last pre-war large-boxer range. Its 22 hp side-valve boxer, shaft drive, plunger rear suspension and comfortable chassis layout were aimed at long distances and sidecar use. The R 71 is an important endpoint in the development: according to BMW, it was the last BMW with a side-valve engine and the last with an optional hand shift.

Do not confuse an R 71 with an OHV R 66 or motorcycles inspired by it: check frame number, 746 cc side-valve engine, correct gearbox and original components. Assess engine, shaft, suspension, brakes, wheels and 6V electrics for maintenance and safety. On a historic sidecar-capable tourer, matching numbers, correct frame/engine combination and restoration documentation are essential.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Confirm R 71, 1938-1941 years, frame number and 746 cc side-valve engine; do not confuse it with an OHV R 66 or later derivative.
  • From cold, check the side-valve boxer for compression, valve noise, oil circulation and leaks around heads, crankcase and transmission.
  • Test the four-speed gearbox, foot or optional hand shift where fitted, clutch, shaft and final drive for function, play and oil loss.
  • Inspect plunger rear suspension, telescopic fork, frame and mountings for wear, corrosion, distortion or incorrect sidecar modifications.
  • Check 200 mm drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and the 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation; assess sidecar use only with correct mountings.
