R 66 (1938-1941)
GenerationThe 1938-1941 R 66 is the 597 cc OHV flagship boxer with 30 hp, a four-speed gearbox, shaft drive and plunger rear suspension. It is the sporting flagship of the range; distinguish it from the side-valve R 61 despite the shared period.
About the Bmw R 66
The 1938-1941 BMW R 66 was the flagship of BMW's new pre-war boxer range. Its 597 cc OHV twin produces 30 hp and made the R 66, according to BMW, the fastest pre-war BMW motorcycle at 145 km/h. It shares plunger rear suspension and the revised chassis with its contemporaries, but it is not the side-valve R 61: the powerful OHV engine and sporting position belong specifically to the R 66.
For a purchase, frame number, engine identification, correct OHV valve train and restoration quality carry major weight. Check engine, four-speed gearbox, shaft, plunger suspension, telescopic fork and drum brakes for function. The 6V electrics, wheels and frame also deserve inspection; an early flagship boxer with incorrect or mixed components can look convincing while being technically wrong.

What to check before buying
- Confirm R 66, 1938-1941 years, frame number and 597 cc OHV engine; do not confuse it with the side-valve R 61 or R 71.
- From cold, check the OHV boxer for compression, valve-train and timing noise, oil circulation and leaks at heads, crankcase and transmission.
- Test clutch, four-speed gearbox, shaft and final drive for shift quality, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Inspect plunger rear suspension, hydraulically damped telescopic fork, frame and mountings for wear, corrosion, distortion and incorrect restoration work.
- Check 200 mm drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and the 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation.
