Generation

The 1928-1929 R 63 is the short-stroke 735 cc OHV sports boxer with 24 hp, a hand-shift three-speed gearbox and shaft drive. It is the sporting 750 cc version alongside the R 62, not the calmer side-valve tourer.

About this model

About the Bmw R 63

The 1928-1929 BMW R 63 is the short-stroke 750 cc sporting boxer from BMW's first 750 cc series. With 735 cc, 24 hp and 120 km/h, it is distinctly different from the contemporary R 62 tourer: the R 63 was intended for sporting riders and received an OHV engine. It was built for only one year before the pressed-steel-frame R 16 succeeded it.

For a collector, correct identification matters more than capacity alone. Check frame number, engine identification, OHV valve train and the correct early three-speed gearbox before allocating parts or specifications. Then assess engine, shaft, brakes, front suspension and frame for function and originality. Given its rarity, period-correct parts and an evidenced restoration should carry significant weight.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Confirm R 63, 1928-1929 years, frame number and 735 cc OHV engine; do not confuse it with an R 62, R 57 or later R 16.
  • From cold, check the OHV boxer for compression, valve-train and timing noise, oil circulation and leakage.
  • Test the hand-shift three-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for clean operation, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
  • Inspect front drum brake, shaft-drive brake, cables and controls for correct function; have brakes of this age professionally assessed.
  • Check tubular frame, plate-spring fork, spoked wheels, tyres and ignition for cracks, corrosion, incorrect restorations and safe operation.
