R 62 (1928-1929)

Generation

The 1928-1929 R 62 is BMW's first 745 cc side-valve touring boxer with 18 hp, a hand-shift three-speed gearbox and shaft drive. It is the relaxed 750 cc counterpart to the R 63 and not a later pressed-steel R 11.

About this model

About the Bmw R 62

The 1928-1929 BMW R 62 was BMW's first 750 cc touring motorcycle. Its 745 cc side-valve boxer produces 18 hp and combines shaft drive with the early tubular frame. BMW positioned it as a reliable, heavyweight tourer; it is not the sporting R 63 nor the later pressed-steel-frame R 11. The short production run and technical confusion in older restorations make correct identification important.

When buying, verify frame number, engine capacity, side-valve configuration and the correct three-speed gearbox before assigning parts or specifications. Then inspect engine, clutch, shaft, brakes, front suspension and wheels. For a classic 750 cc boxer, originality, appropriate components and documented restoration quality are often more important than an optically perfect machine.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Confirm R 62, 1928-1929 years, 745 cc side-valve engine and frame number; do not confuse it with an R 52, R 63 or later R 11.
  • From cold, check the side-valve boxer for compression, valve noise, oil circulation and leakage around engine and transmission.
  • Test the hand-shift three-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for usability, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
  • Inspect front drum brake, shaft-drive brake, cables and controls for correct function; have brakes professionally assessed for safety.
  • Check tubular frame, plate-spring fork, spoked wheels, tyres and ignition for cracks, corrosion, non-original repairs and safe operation.
