R 61 (1938-1941)

Generation

The 1938-1941 R 61 is the 600 cc side-valve boxer with 18 hp, four-speed gearbox, shaft drive and plunger rear suspension. It replaced the R 6 as a relaxed twin; the R 66 is a separate, more powerful OHV sports boxer.

About this model

About the Bmw R 61

The 1938-1941 BMW R 61 is the relaxed 600 cc entry model in BMW's new pre-war boxer range. It replaced the R 6 and uses an 18 hp side-valve boxer with shaft drive. Its distinguishing technical feature is the new-series plunger rear suspension, combined with a four-speed gearbox and telescopic fork. The R 61 is therefore not the sporting OHV R 66 despite their related era and capacity.

For buyers, frame number, correct side-valve engine, four-speed gearbox and the condition of the plunger suspension are essential. Then inspect engine, shaft, brakes, fork, wheels and 6V electrics for maintenance and safe operation. On a pre-war touring boxer, matching numbers, correct components and carefully evidenced restoration quality are often more relevant than attractive presentation alone.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Confirm R 61, 1938-1941 years, frame number and side-valve engine; do not confuse it with an R 6, R 66 or R 71.
  • From cold, check the 600 cc side-valve boxer for compression, valve noise, oil pressure and leakage around heads, crankcase and transmission.
  • Test clutch, four-speed gearbox, shaft and final drive for shift quality, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
  • Inspect plunger rear suspension, telescopic fork, frame and mountings for wear, corrosion, distortion and non-original repairs.
  • Check drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and the 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation.
