R 6 (1937)
GenerationThe 1937 R 6 is the 600 cc side-valve boxer with 18 hp, foot shift, four-speed gearbox and shaft drive. It is BMW's first 600 cc model, not a later rear-suspended R 61.
About the Bmw R 6
The 1937 BMW R 6 is BMW's first 600 cc motorcycle and was in production for only one year. It combines an 18 hp 600 cc side-valve boxer with a lightweight tubular frame, foot shift and shaft drive. Its long-stroke character suited touring and sidecar use, but the R 6 is not the later R 61: that model gained rear suspension and a different later chassis layout.
When buying, frame number, the correct 1937 side-valve engine, four-speed gearbox and frame construction are essential. Check engine, shaft, brakes, telescopic fork, wheels and 6V electrics for function and age. Because of its short production run, parts availability and originality are an important part of the assessment.

What to check before buying
- Confirm BMW R 6, 1937 year and frame number; do not confuse it with the later R 61 or other 600 cc BMW boxers.
- From cold, check the 600 cc side-valve boxer for compression, valve noise, oil circulation and leaks around engine and transmission.
- Test foot shift, four-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for function, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Inspect tubular frame, telescopic fork and mountings for corrosion, cracks, distortion and non-original repairs.
- Check 200 mm drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and the 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation and parts availability.
