R 57 (1928-1930)
GenerationThe 1928-1930 R 57 is the 494 cc OHV sporting boxer with 18 hp, a larger carburettor, larger front drum brake and shaft drive. It replaced the R 47 in the 500 cc sports class; the 750 cc R 63 is a separate model.
About the Bmw R 57
The 1928-1930 BMW R 57 followed the R 47 as BMW's sporting 500 cc model. It uses a 494 cc OHV boxer producing 18 hp, but gained a larger carburettor and a larger front brake drum. It is therefore an evolution of the early sporting boxers, not the touring-focused R 52 and not an R 47 with only a different type plate.
For a collector or restorer, correct identification and the condition of the sporting mechanicals are decisive. Check frame number, OHV engine, carburettor, front brake, hand-shift three-speed gearbox and shaft drive. Also assess frame, front suspension, wheels, brakes and ignition for safety. On this pre-war motorcycle, a documented, period-correct restoration weighs more than a cosmetically attractive but technically uncertain example.

What to check before buying
- Confirm R 57, 1928-1930 years and frame number; do not confuse it with an R 47, R 52 or 750 cc R 63.
- Check that the 494 cc boxer has the correct OHV valve train and assess cold starting, compression, oil circulation, mechanical noise and leaks.
- Inspect the larger front drum brake, remaining brake parts and cables for correct function; have braking performance on a motorcycle of this age assessed by a specialist.
- Test the hand-shift three-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for clean operation, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Check frame, front suspension, spoked wheels, tyres and ignition for corrosion, cracks, non-original repairs and safe operation.
