R 47 (1927-1928)
GenerationThe 1927-1928 R 47 is the 494 cc OHV sporting boxer with 18 hp, a hand-shift three-speed gearbox and shaft drive. It followed the R 37 as a more accessible sports model and is not a side-valve R 42.
About the Bmw R 47
The 1927-1928 BMW R 47 succeeded the rare R 37 as a sporting 500 cc boxer. With 18 hp (13 kW), it is more powerful than its predecessor and was intended as a more accessible sports motorcycle; more than 1,700 found buyers. The R 47 is an OHV model with a hand-shift three-speed gearbox and shaft drive, and must not be confused with the side-valve R 42 despite their similar capacity and production era.
An R 47 deserves an authenticity check before appearance. Verify frame number, engine identification and the correct OHV valve train; then inspect engine, gearbox, shaft, brakes, frame and ignition. The condition of period-correct parts and evidenced restorations matters to both reliability and value on this early sports boxer.

- Test the hand-shift three-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for clean shifts, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Inspect brakes, cables, front suspension, frame and mounting points for cracks, corrosion, distortion or incorrect restoration work.
- Check spoked wheels, tyres and ignition for safe operation, and have originality of engine and sporting parts assessed by a specialist.
