About this model

About the Bmw R 45 S

The BMW R 45 S is the full 35 hp version of BMW's compact R 45 boxer from 1978-1985. The 473 cc air-cooled twin was also supplied as a 27 hp N version; the S designation in this canonical row belongs only to the 26 kW/35 hp version. It has a five-speed gearbox and shaft drive, but it is not an R 65: that model has a larger 650 cc engine and its own specifications.

The R 45 S suits riders seeking a compact classic boxer in its original full-power form. When buying, confirm designation, registration and output; many motorcycles have been restricted, rebored or rebuilt with R 65 parts over time. Also inspect servicing, pushrod seals, valve train, Bing carburettors, clutch, shaft, brakes and the 12V charging system.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Confirm that it is a 35 hp R 45 S from designation, registration and engine configuration; do not confuse it with the 27 hp R 45 N or an R 65 conversion.
  • From cold, inspect the boxer for oil leaks at pushrod seals, heads and crankcase, plus unwanted valve-train or timing noise.
  • Test Bing carburettors, choke and throttle cables for synchronisation, stable idle and clean response.
  • Check clutch, five-speed gearbox, shaft and final drive for slip, difficult shifts, play or oil loss.
  • Test front disc, rear drum, forks, swingarm, wheel bearings and 12V charging voltage; inspect wiring and modifications for quality.
