R 42 (1926-1928)
GenerationThe 1926-1928 R 42 is the 494 cc side-valve boxer with 12 hp and shaft drive. It succeeded the R 32 and gained a brake on the shaft; do not confuse it with the OHV R 37 and R 47 sports models.
About the Bmw R 42
The 1926-1928 BMW R 42 is the direct successor to the R 32 in the 500 cc touring class. It retains the 494 cc side-valve boxer, but produces 12 hp and received a revised brake on the shaft drive instead of the earlier block brake. Its lower price made the R 42 a much bigger sales success than the R 32. It is therefore not a sporting R 37 or R 47: the side-valve configuration and relaxed character belong to this R 42.
For a purchase, type and engine numbers, the correct side-valve engine and the condition of the frame, shaft and braking system are decisive. Also test gearbox, clutch, front suspension, wheels and ignition for safe operation. On a pre-war classic, a documented, period-correct restoration usually matters more than attractive finish without technical evidence.

What to check before buying
- Confirm R 42, 1926-1928 years and frame/engine numbers; do not confuse it with an R 32, R 37 or R 47.
- Check that the 494 cc boxer is the correct side-valve version and assess cold starting, compression, oil leaks and mechanical noise.
- Test the hand-shift gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for usability, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Inspect the shaft-drive brake, remaining brake parts and control cables for correct function; brakes of this age merit specialist safety inspection.
- Check frame, front suspension, spoked wheels, tyres and ignition for corrosion, cracks, non-original repairs and safe operation.
