EMW R 35/2 (1952–1953)
GenerationThe R 35/2 is the Eisenach EMW transitional version with a 340 cc single, 14 hp, shaft drive, hydraulically damped telescopic fork and foot shift. Assign this row only to an explicit EMW/BMW R 35/2 reference, never a generic R 35 or R 35/3.
About the Bmw R 35/2
The catalogue label R 35/2 needs particular care: the 1952–1953 machine is not a BMW from Munich, but the EMW R 35/2 built in Eisenach, descended from the earlier R 35 production line. It uses a 340 cc upright single with shaft drive, 14 hp and approximately 100 km/h performance. Its identifiable changes are the hydraulically damped telescopic fork and foot gearchange; the later rear-suspended EMW R 35/3 is a different version.
Assess an offered example first by its maker's plate, frame and engine numbers, and year. Do not confuse it with the 1937–1940 BMW R 35 or an R 35/3. Check cold starting, compression, oil pressure and ignition, the four-speed gearbox and shaft, and the fork, drum brakes, spoked wheels and 6V electrics. Originality and correct EMW/BMW-SAG history are decisive for value and parts selection.

What to check before buying
- Confirm an EMW R 35/2, 1952–1953 year and identification numbers; an R 35/2 is neither a pre-war BMW R 35 nor an R 35/3.
- From cold, check the 340 cc single for compression, oil pressure, mechanical noise, leaks and correct 6V ignition/charging operation.
- Test the foot shift, four-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for shift quality, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Inspect the hydraulically damped telescopic fork, frame and sidecar mountings for corrosion, cracks, alignment and period-correct parts.
- Check drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres, wiring and switches; do not infer safety from a restored appearance.
