R 32 (1923-1926)
GenerationThe 1923-1926 R 32 is BMW's first 494 cc side-valve boxer with a hand-shift three-speed gearbox and shaft drive. This is the original, calm 8.5 hp version; do not confuse it with the OHV R 37 sports motorcycle.
About the Bmw R 32
The 1923-1926 BMW R 32 is BMW's first motorcycle and the origin of the classic BMW formula: a 494 cc air-cooled two-cylinder boxer with shaft drive. Max Friz's design placed the cylinders across the airflow and coupled the engine to an integrated gearbox; this boxer-and-shaft layout later became a defining BMW feature.
The R 32 is an early side-valve classic with a hand-shift three-speed gearbox, not a later OHV sporting boxer. For purchase or restoration, frame number, engine number, correct side-valve engine, shaft drive and the quality of the early tubular frame are essential. Also inspect brakes, front suspension, wheels and ignition; originality and restoration documentation matter more on this landmark model than an odometer reading.

What to check before buying
- Confirm R 32, 1923-1926 years and frame/engine numbers; do not confuse it with an R 37, R 42 or later BMW boxer.
- Check that the 494 cc boxer is the correct side-valve version and assess cold compression, oil circulation, mechanical noise and leaks.
- Test the hand-shift three-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for usability, play and oil loss.
- Inspect the early brazed double-tube frame, front suspension and mounting points for cracks, corrosion, distortion or incorrect repairs.
- Check brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and ignition for safe operation; original components and correct restoration details can be costly.
