R 3 (1936)
GenerationThe 1936 R 3 is the rare 305 cc OHV single with 11 hp, a hand-shift four-speed gearbox and shaft drive. This row belongs only to the BMW R 3, not R 2/R 4 or modern models sharing the name.
About the Bmw R 3
The BMW R 3 is the short-lived, standalone 305 cc single that BMW built only in 1936. It combines an 11 hp OHV single with a pressed-steel frame. The R 3 was positioned between the smaller R 2 and more powerful R 4, but lacked both the R 2's favourable 200 cc regulation and the R 4's output. Production therefore stopped at 740 units.
For a buyer or restorer, correct identification is essential: an R 3 is not an R 2, R 4 or a modern Yamaha R3. Check frame number, engine, hand-shift four-speed gearbox, shaft and pressed-steel frame carefully. On a rare pre-war single, originality, braking performance, front suspension, wheels and 6V electrics are at least as important as appearance or odometer reading.

What to check before buying
- Confirm BMW R 3, 1936 year and frame number; do not confuse it with an R 2, R 4 or modern R3.
- From cold, check the 305 cc OHV single for compression, valve noise, oil circulation and leaks at engine and transmission.
- Test the hand-shift four-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for usability, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Inspect the pressed-steel frame, plate-spring fork and mountings for cracks, corrosion, distortion and non-original repairs.
- Check drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and the 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation and original components.
