R 24 (1948-1950)
GenerationThe 1948-1950 R 24 is the early post-war 247 cc single with 12 hp, a four-speed gearbox and shaft drive. It is based on the R 23, but the extra gear and higher output belong specifically to the R 24.
About the Bmw R 24
The BMW R 24 marked the restart of BMW motorcycle production after the Second World War. Built from 1948 through 1950, it was based on the pre-war R 23 but gained a revised 247 cc single producing 12 hp and, for the first time on a BMW single, a four-speed gearbox. Its bolted tubular frame, rigid rear end and shaft drive identify it as an early post-war classic.
The R 24 is therefore neither a pre-war R 23 nor a later R 25: verify year, frame number, four-speed gearbox and correct engine specification. For buyers, the condition of engine, clutch, transmission, shaft and 6V electrics is decisive. Also inspect drum brakes, spoked wheels, forks and the originality of frame and body parts; an attractive restoration is not automatically technically correct or safe.

What to check before buying
- Verify R 24, 1948-1950 year range, frame number and four-speed gearbox; do not confuse it with the three-speed R 23 or later R 25.
- From cold, check compression, oil pressure, valve train and leaks from the 247 cc single and transmission.
- Test the four-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for correct shifting, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Inspect the bolted double-tube frame, telescopic fork and mounting points for cracks, corrosion and non-original restoration work.
- Check drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and the 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation; parts quality varies greatly between restorations.
