R 23 (1938-1940)
GenerationThe 1938-1940 R 23 is the 247 cc pre-war single with 10 hp, three gears and shaft drive. It followed the R 20 for the 250 cc class; do not assign later R 24 specifications to this version.
About the Bmw R 23
The BMW R 23 is BMW's last pre-war single-cylinder motorcycle. It was built from 1938 through 1940 for Germany's new up-to-250 cc licence class after the earlier 200 cc exemption ended. The R 23 uses a 247 cc single producing 10 hp, a bolted tubular frame and shaft drive. It develops the R 20 concept, but its larger engine, 250 cc class and own production period mean it is not an R 20.
The R 23 in turn formed the basis for the post-war R 24, but that model has an uprated engine and a four-speed gearbox. When buying, always confirm the frame number, engine, three-speed transmission and correct pre-war details. On such an early classic, restoration quality, correct parts, brake performance and the state of the 6V system matter more than an odometer reading; have uncertain examples assessed by a specialist.

What to check before buying
- Confirm R 23, 1938-1940 years and 247 cc single from the frame number and documentation; do not confuse it with an R 20 or post-war R 24.
- Inspect the bolted double-tube frame, telescopic fork and mounting points for corrosion, cracks, incorrect fixings and restoration evidence.
- From cold, check compression, oil pressure, valve train and leaks from the single-cylinder engine and transmission.
- Test the three-speed gearbox, clutch, shaft and final drive for clean shifts, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Check drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and the 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation and availability of correct parts.
