R 20 (1937-1938)

Generation

The 1937-1938 R 20 is the 192 cc single with 8 hp, three gears and shaft drive. Identify it by the bolted tubular frame; it is the short bridge between the R 2 and R 23, not an R-series boxer.

About this model

About the Bmw R 20

The BMW R 20 is a short-lived, standalone pre-war single from 1937-1938, not a small boxer. It replaced the pressed-steel BMW R 2 and was BMW's first motorcycle with a bolted tubular frame. With 192 cc, 8 hp and a quoted 95 km/h top speed, the R 20 was intended for Germany's up-to-200 cc class, which was then exempt from motorcycle licence and vehicle-tax requirements.

Production ended quickly when regulations changed in 1938 and BMW introduced the R 23 for the new 250 cc class. For a buyer or restorer, the frame number, correct 192 cc single and original frame/fork construction are therefore essential; do not confuse it with the R 2 or succeeding R 23. Assess each example carefully for engine condition, three-speed gearbox, shaft drive, drum brakes and 6V system, and judge restorations for correctness and safety.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Verify R 20, 1937-1938 year range and 192 cc single from frame number and documentation; do not confuse it with the R 2 or R 23.
  • Inspect the bolted double-tube frame, forks and mounting points for corrosion, cracks, incorrect fasteners and non-original repairs.
  • From cold, check compression, oil circulation, valve train and leaks around the single-cylinder engine and transmission.
  • Test clutch, three-speed gearbox, shaft and final drive for clean engagement, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
  • Check drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation; correct original parts can be scarce.
