About the Bmw R 1100 GS
The BMW R 1100 GS is the first generation of BMW's modern GS series, produced from 1994 to 1999. The 1,085 cc air/oil-cooled twin-cam boxer produces 59 kW (80 hp) via shaft drive. The Telelever front suspension, a BMW patent that separates steering and spring functions, gave the R 1100 GS exceptional handling stability for its era. With standard ABS it was one of the safest adventure motorcycles on the market. The 233 kg weight and high seat height require experience.
The R 1100 GS targets experienced tourers and adventure riders who want to combine motorway riding with light off-road capability. It is not as agile on genuinely difficult terrain as a dedicated enduro, but for European gravel roads and farm tracks it is excellent. Period rivals were the Honda Africa Twin and Yamaha Super Ténéré. A healthy used supply exists with extensive service histories, GS owners typically maintain their machines well.
