The BMW R100GS is the iconic travel enduro introduced by BMW Motorrad in 1987, powered by an air-cooled boxer-twin of 980 cc producing 60 hp. The R100GS was BMW's answer to the growing adventure market, building on the legendary R80G/S with which BMW had already won the Dakar Rally. The distinctive Paralever rear suspension eliminated the so-called 'cardan jerk' that had plagued shaft-drive BMW models, and the large Paris-Dakar 24-litre fuel tank gave the bike a virtually unlimited range. BMW produced the R100GS until 1996.
The R100GS targets riders who want to combine adventure touring with solid reliability. The upright riding position, low centre of gravity and modest power output make it accessible to average-experienced riders, while the boxer engine lasts virtually indefinitely with correct maintenance. In its day it competed with the Honda Africa Twin and Yamaha XTZ750. Today the R100GS is a valued classic with a dedicated fanbase, low running costs and easy maintainability.
