About this model

About the Bmw C1 200

The BMW C1 200 is a roofed scooter powered by a 176 cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine, produced from 2000 to 2002. The C1 was an unusual concept: a scooter with an aluminium safety cell above the seat that protects the rider in a collision through a three-piece tubular roll frame and a bucket seat with harness belts. In many European countries this officially permitted riding without a helmet, although the Netherlands did not recognise that exemption. The C1 200 was the larger variant alongside the C1 125.

The BMW C1 200 targets urban commuters who want to ride in all weather without fully gearing up. The roof keeps the rider relatively dry in light rain. Practical usability is however limited by the 186 kg kerb weight and wide dimensions, making parking and slow-speed manoeuvring harder than a conventional scooter. Spare parts have become increasingly scarce.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Check the rubber liners inside the safety cell for hairline cracks and loose attachments; the aluminium structure must be fully intact for its safety function.
  • Inspect the seat belt harness and locking mechanisms for correct operation; worn belts cannot be sourced from mainstream suppliers.
  • Check the CVT system (variator and drive belt) for wear; BMW-specific parts for the C1 are expensive and hard to source.
  • Inspect the electrical system for corrosion, particularly near the fairing floor where water can pool.
  • Ask for the engine service history; the single-cylinder SOHC requires timely valve clearance checks and carburettor servicing.
