About the Bimota SB 3
The Bimota SB3 is the Suzuki-powered successor to the SB2, unveiled in 1979 and built through 1982/83. It combines the air-cooled Suzuki GS1000 inline-four with a light chromium-molybdenum Bimota trellis frame, Marzocchi suspension and Brembo brakes. Around 402 were built; many were rolling chassis or kits, while German SB3Ds were assembled as complete motorcycles by Suzuki Germany.
An SB3 is therefore not a uniform GS1000 with bodywork. Donor engine, output and electrical parts must be verified on each example. For an enthusiast it offers familiar classic Suzuki mechanicals in a far more exclusive chassis. Buy on authenticity and maintenance condition, paying special attention to low production identity, original frame/bodywork and safely functioning old suspension and brakes.

What to check before buying
- Verify SB3 versus German SB3D, kit or rolling chassis through frame number and documentation.
- Check the GS1000 inline-four for carburettor set-up, cam chain, charging, leaks and aged wiring.
- Inspect Bimota trellis frame, swingarm and bodywork mounts for cracks, corrosion and non-original repairs.
- Check Marzocchi suspension and Brembo brakes for safe operation, overhaul and correct original components.
- Match displacement and output to the actual donor engine; early GS1000 figures differ by market and engine.
